River or stillwater. Bring an appetite for big trout.

Gates of the Mountains puts a different Missouri River day within reach of Helena. This is upstream of Holter Dam and downstream of Hauser Dam, where the flowing river opens into Upper Holter Reservoir. Anglers call the river reach Land of the Giants, or LOTG. It is separate from the Missouri below Holter Dam around Craig, and we plan it that way.

The trout are a big reason we come here. In our experience, the average fish we land on LOTG trips tends to be bigger than on our Craig floats, and some days the fishing is hard to beat. That is our experience on the water, not a promise for every trip. Reservoir trout can move into the river, giving us a chance to fish for hefty rainbows and browns in the same system.

You have options here. We can work the current in the river section below Hauser or fish the quieter lake and stillwater sections of Upper Holter. Nymphs, streamers and dry flies each have their place as the season, wind and feeding fish allow. Jet-boat access helps us move between suitable water and repeat a productive drift. We will talk through the boat, your group and the kind of day you want before confirming the trip.

There is plenty to bring the rest of the group along for, too. The Gates canyon draws visitors for limestone walls, wildlife and seasonal boat tours tied to the Lewis and Clark story. Helena makes a useful base for fishing and a day exploring town or the canyon. Sightseeing tours are run by the marina's operator, separately from GFM; check their current schedule before building a tour into your plans.

The matrix starts on USGS 06065500 below Hauser Dam, with the hourly NWS forecast at that gauge. Its CFS measures river discharge into the upper reservoir, not lake level or conditions across the whole lake. Compare it with the Craig page's below-Holter gauge when planning different days. Wind can change the reservoir quickly, so we will confirm meeting details, suitable water and current access with you. Ask about lodging if you want the guide days and overnight stay lined up together.
